Curious about what actually goes on during a septic tank clean? At CST Group, we don’t just pump and go. Our team rolls up, checks out every part of your system, and handles the cleaning from top to bottom. We look for anything that might cause trouble later and offer advice and solutions. The whole idea is to keep your tank running smoothly and save you from expensive repairs down the road. Here’s how we do it when you call us out to service your tank.
Step 1: Location and Assessment
Our technicians start by locating the access lid for your septic tank. Often the access lid for your septic tank is buried, sometimes they are at ground level (if we’re lucky). If your lid isn’t at ground level, it needs to be located and exposed for the tank to be cleaned out properly. On our initial visit, we use the location of the mushroom/air vent and a prodder spear to prod down in your lawn and locate the tank lid so it can be dug up. Once we have the lid located and exposed, we will take photos/create a map for our records and to make future empties and maintenance easier.
Step 2: Cleaning of Filters
Prior to your septic tank being cleaned, if your tank has an outlet filter, this will be removed from it’s casing and washed and returned to the filter chamber. This should be carried out around every 6 months.
Step 3: Cleaning out of the Tank
We use our specialised vacuum trucks to remove all the waste – solids and liquids from the site. In our fleet of vacuum trucks we have a range of sizes to allow for all property access.
Step 5: Tank Inspection & Recommendations
Once the waste is removed we carry out a visual inspection of the interior of your tank to ensure its in good condition.
This inspection enables us to provide a report on your tank condition, and a recommended emptying frequency. Along with any other things we’ve noticed that may need attention in the near future.
Step 7: Proper Waste Disposal
All waste removed from your tank is carted to your local council waste water treatment facility. CST Group ensures full compliance with environmental regulations throughout this critical final step.
Timeline and Frequency
A typical septic tank cleaning process takes 1-2 hours depending on tank size and condition. Most New Zealand households need emptied approx every 3 years, though this varies based on household size, water usage, and tank capacity.
