If you’ve lived on a property with a septic tank for a while, you’ll know the importance of regular cleaning and will be familiar with the signs that your tank needs to be emptied. However, if you’re relatively new to the concept, you might not know what to look for. For over 20 years, CST Group has offered thorough and professional septic tank cleaning that Waikato residents have come to rely on to keep their tanks in good working order and ensure years of hassle-free operation. In this blog, we share some of the signs to tip you off that it’s time for a tank clean out.
A Suspiciously Vibrant Lawn
One sign that your tank is due for a clean out is that the grass above and around the tank is looking lusher and healthier than the rest of your lawn. Especially during the dryer seasons, this usually means that the tank is full or blocked and water is beginning to overflow.
A septic tank is the end point for all the wastewater from your home. On reaching the tank, it separates into three layers: heavy solids (sludge) that sinks to the bottom; lighter waste matter like oils and grease (scum) that float to the top; and wastewater (effluent) that fills most of the tank and empties into the drainfield. Eventually, when the tank is full, the sludge will begin to block up the outlet and will stop draining properly to the drainage field. At this point, you will likely notice a strong odour coming from the tank area as the tank levels are so high.
Drains Are Slow to Empty
If you notice that drains and toilets around your home are slow to empty/making gurgling noises, either your drains are blocked, or your septic tank is full.
When your septic tank is full, you may notice water beginning to pool around the area. Especially in the absence of rain, this is a sure sign that the tank is full. If you’re lucky, you’ll notice this first and will be able to call in the professionals for a clean out before you start to experience unpleasant smells, blocked drains, or any of the other signs mentioned above.
